The Prince George's County Drug Policy Coalition, Inc. "Empowering Future Leaders Scholarship" for the 2017-2018 Academic Year



The Prince George's County Drug Policy Coalition, Inc. is pleased to announce the "Empowering Future Leaders Scholarship" for the 2017-2018 academic year.



           The Prince George's County Drug Policy Coalition, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that promotes policies and laws that embrace the public health nature of drug abuse. Through our scholarship program, we provide community-based support to families within the county with a focus on students obtaining higher education and living a drug free life.

       The application forms are due Friday, May 5, 2017. All qualifying applicants will receive a notice of an award.
       The Prince George's County Drug Policy Coalition, Inc. represents one of many local affiliates of the National African American Drug Policy Coalition, Inc. Our national organization consists of a coalition of 25 preeminent organizations. Through the support of our national organization, interested organizational partners, and grassroots members like you, we hope to prevent and reduce illegal drug abuse and related crimes in Prince George's County.

The Prince George's County Drug Policy Coalition Salutes the Life of Maj. Gen. John R. Hawkins


        The Prince George’s County Drug Policy Coalition is sad to announce the sudden passing of retired Maj. Gen. John R. Hawkins, III, co-executive director of the National African American Drug Policy Coalition, on February 3, 2017.






        A D.C. native, “Hawk” as he was often called, was born at the then Freedmen’s Hospital of Howard University in 1949. He graduated from Tularosa High School in Tularosa, N.M. in 1967.  He then graduated from the Howard University College of Liberal Arts in 1971 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Marketing. Hawkins went on to earn a Masters of Public Administration in American Public Policy and Government Management from The American University in 1976 and a Juris Doctor degree from The American University Law School. He studied International Law at the University of London Law faculty in England in 1979.  He was also a graduate of the National Security Fellowship Program at the JFK School of Government at Harvard University, the Command and General Staff College and the Army War College National Security Fellowship Program.


        He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Michelle R. Hawkins, who resides in Silver Spring, Md. and two children, Dr. John L. Hawkins IV and his spouse, Cindylynn; as well as Mercedes Nicole Hawkins and her spouse, Doug.  He is also survived by five grandchildren—Amandalynn, Arianna, Amari, Christian, and John R.
